This baby ear flap hat is a result from my inspiration in February 2008. It´s named after my late beloved Grandad and also my little Godson for whom this hat is made and who also carries this name.

Supplies:

Rowan Soft Baby, 1 skein/50 g.

Size 4 mm (US 6) double pointed needles

1 Stitch marker

1 Cable needle

Size: Approx. 6-12 M.

Make the ear flaps first (x2) as followed:

CO 7 sts. Knit through Chart 1 once and continue with Chart 2. Knit through Chart 2 once.  Break yarn and make another ear flap.  Continue with Chart 2b with the ear flaps and CO 18 sts (neck) between the ear flap-needles. Now you have 3 needles on your work; 1. needle contains one ear flap (15 sts), 2. needle contains 18 sts you just casted on and 3. needle contains the other ear flap sts (15 sts).  Work even with these sts back and forth until for 6 rows. Knit seed stitch on 2. needle (k 1, p 1). The ear flap chart changes so that the first and the last st at each end of the 2. needle is knitted or purled according to the seed stitch and will not be made as slip 1 pwise anymore.  When you have worked 6 rows with all needles, continue with the right side. After the 3. needle, CO 18 sts on the 4. needle and join to begin working in the round. You now have 15 sts on needles 1 and 3 and 18 sts on 2. and 4. needle.  Place marker to the beginning of the round if you want to. Continue working with Chart 2 b on 1. and 3. needle.  Knit seed stitch on 2. and 4. needle.

When you have worked even 5 rows with all sts, begin chart 3 on 2. and 4. needle. Work even until the height is approx. 12 cm (or as wanted). Begin decreases every alt row as followed:

DECREASES:

1.      Row:

1.+3. Needle: Purl 2.+3. st together, slip the 7. st knitwise, k2tog and pass the slipped st over the stitches. (sk2p) Purl 13.+14. st together. 2.+4. Needle: Purl 1.+2. st together, slip 9. st, knit 1, pass slipped st  over the other. (skp) Purl 17.+18. st together.

3.      Row:

1.+3. Needle: Purl 1.+2. st together, purl 10.+11. st together. 2.+4. Needle: Slip 7. st, k2tog and pass the slipped st over. (sk2p)

      5. Row:

1.+3. Needle: Take the last st of 4. needle to the beginning of 1. needle and p2tog. Knit 3 and then k2tog.  Knit to last st and purl the last st together with the first st of next needle. 2.+4. Needle: Knit 2, k2tog, sk2p, k2tog. Purl the last st together with the first between the needles.

7. Row:

1. Needle: Knit the first 2 sts tog and the last 2 sts tog. 2. Needle: Knit the last 2 sts together. 3. Needle: No decreases.  4. Needle: Knit the first 2 sts together.

8. Row:

1.+3. Needle: Make the cables as followed: Slip 2 sts on cable needle and hold to back of work, knit 1 and k2tog from cable needle. 2.+4. Needle: Make the cables otherwise: Slip 1 st on cable needle and hold to front of work, knit 3 together, knit 1 from cable needle. Slip 2 sts on cable needle and hold to back of work, knit 1 and k2tog from cable needle.

There now should be 4 sts on each needle after all decreases. Knit 1 row. On the last row knit the 2 middle sts together on every needle; 3 sts on every needle. Break yarn and pull it through the remaining sts. BO.

Ties:

Pick up 4 sts from the middle of the ear flap and work k 1, p 1 seed stitch. Slip 1 st purlwise at each end of the wrong side. Work seed stitch until the measure is right for you. Then slip 1 st, k3tog and pass the sl st over the k3tog. (sk3p) Make another tie.
